Google Hosted Site Search Now Available Internationally

Google Custom Search adds powerful search capabilities to web sites and applications

London, November 20, 2007 – Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) today announced the international availability of the Google Custom Search™ platform, a simple and inexpensive way for small businesses and organisations of all kinds to add Google™ search to their websites. In three simple steps, businesses can sign up online for the hosted service, and in less than 10 minutes customers and visitors are able to search their site using the power of Google’s search technology, for more relevant results.

“For many organisations, a website is their window to the world and significant investment goes into attracting customers to the site,” said Robert Whiteside, Enterprise Manager UK and Ireland. “Keeping visitors on a site once they arrive, however, is a challenge and the absence of a search facility can be a major cause of a lack of website ‘stickiness’. By improving the ease, speed and accuracy with which users can find what they need, businesses can ensure their website justifies the investments made.”

Custom Search is offered as a free, ads-supported Custom Search Engine™ and the Custom Search Business Edition™ for organisations requiring more customisation and support.

To set up a Google Custom Search, businesses simply:

  1. Identify the site(s) to search
  2. Add the search box and customise the appearance by adding a logo and matching the site’s look and feel
  3. Further customise search results with refinements that reflect site content (such as categories)

The UK Parliament uses Google’s Custom Search Business Edition on their website www.parliament.uk to make nine million documents easily accessible to the public. In the face of increasing user demand for effective search solutions, Google offered a fast and robust site search platform along with a simple implementation. Google worked closely with Parliament’s electronic publishing contractors, The Stationery Office Ltd, to implement the new search solution in time for the return of the House in October.

The Google Custom Search platform also allows users to integrate search into personal and community sites and blogs, while developers can use the Google Custom Search APIs to enable rich, contextual search within their applications.

Both the Google Custom Search Engine and the Custom Search Business Edition provide:

The Google Custom Search Business Edition provides additional benefits such as:

Google Custom Search Business Edition starts at around $100 US (approximately £50) per year for searching up to 5,000 pages, and extends to $2,250 US (approximately £1,125) per year for up to 300,000 pages. Larger volumes of pages are supported through Google’s enterprise sales group.
