Google Announces UK News Service

LONDON – May 12, 2003 – Google, developer of the award-winning web search engine, today launched a new version of Google News for the UK. Google News UK provides access to current news headlines and photos from more than 4,500 international news sources, while giving more prominence to stories and sources local to the UK. The service offers links to articles about UK businesses, politics, entertainment and sport, while also providing UK users with up-to-the-minute news headlines and related photos from around the world.

Generated solely by computers, Google News UK is an example of Google’s ongoing commitment to innovation and to enabling its users in UK to find the information they are looking for. The service delivers continuous, real-time news updates from UK and around the world as they are published, and uses clustering technologies to group headlines from different publications together, enabling users to read multiple viewpoints on a given news event.

“While maintaining a global perspective, Google News UK also provides more UK headlines and sources,” said Larry Page, Google’s co-founder and president of Products. “With this increased coverage of local news, users in UK can track topics of local interest, as well as those from around the world.”

Google News UK has an easy-to-use interface that enables users to view headlines and photos grouped in categories: World, UK, Business, Entertainment, Technology and Sport, and is available as a tab from www.google.co.uk, or from news.google.co.uk.
